IT4Curaçao Full-Stack Software Engineer Program: a challenging, exciting and educational experience”.

– Jordan Cyntje –

Jordan Cyntje is a 28-year-old Air Traffic Controller from Curaçao, now working in the ATC Tower at the Aruba Queen Beatrix International Airport, is one of five students that embarked on a year-long journey, to become a certified full-stack engineer. Jordan is a MIL graduate, likes gaming and loves his job as an air traffic controller. “I’m forever calculating in my head, and I love that!”.

Yet, he had been scouting for some time for opportunities to work remotely. A friend of his, currently working in The Netherlands, sent him the link of IT4Curaçao. Thank you, friend! IT4Curaçao had been actively recruiting individuals with an interest in becoming software developers and join the IT workforce of Curaçao. We’re happy the IT-ecosystem got to Jordan, because he applied for a position in the very first group of IT-enthusiasts, successfully passed the interview rounds and embarked on a learning journey to become a certified full-stack engineer.

I had the opportunity to interview Jordan and I learned a lot about his experience.

How was the interview process?

The interviews went very smoothly. I felt like there was a lot in my favor. I knew from the start that only five applicants were to be selected for this program, but I was very confident that I was going to take one of those seats. I had a total of two interviews and after the second interview I was told that I was one of the chosen ones.

How was your first day?

The day I got to know the other members of the group I was a little shocked. The class was very different than I expected. The people that enrolled were very diverse; a teacher, a student and two people that worked in hospitality… And me of course, an air traffic controller. Everyone had different skills in different area’s and only one person had a little experience with IT.

How did you experience the course?

I thought it was going to be a smooth ride, also for the other members of the group. Boy was I wrong! The course was very intense, it required a lot of time and a lot of dedication. I was lucky to have a lot of time on my hands thanks to my job.

The course is set up nicely. You always start with some theory, a lot of reading. After getting familiar with the theoretical part, you transition pretty smoothly into coding. “They do it in such a way that you’re excited to start coding”. My first line of code: ‘Hello World’ on a page was extremely exciting. “I was like what??!! I did that!” My excitement and skills kept growing as I learned more and more.

Which programming languages did you learn?

We did HTML, JavaScript, React and CSS.

What was the hardest part of learning a new software language?

Even though I have a high proficiency in the English language, I was unfamiliar with the terminology used in some of the languages, especially React. I had to look up certain words on Google to understand the logic of my code. The language used by software developers, although English, is not as easy as it seems.

What is your view of IT?
I was always interested in IT and I have a friend who works in the sector as a software developer, so I am regularly updated on the trends within the sector. Right now, I want to jump into this world. My goal is to be able to independently work in the sector as a software developer. Matter of fact, my partner also got enthusiastic about IT and is currently enrolled in a different type of course in the IT sector.

Anything else you want to add?

“I would like to express my gratitude towards IT4Curaçao for the opportunity, their patience and time spent on us. It’s a skill I have acquired, and I will be forever grateful for it. I will make good use of it”.
